An insect hotel can be a fun way to discover up close which small animals live in your area. The most important thing is not how beautiful the hotel looks, but whether it is safe and suitable for the animals you are making it for.
What do you need?
Use a sturdy wooden construction and natural materials with different textures, such as hollow stems and pieces of wood. Only use materials that are clean, dry and untreated.
Create different rooms
Different insects have different preferences. Variation in openings and materials makes the hotel more interesting.
Choose a good location
Hang or place the insect hotel securely in a quiet place. A spot with sufficient sun and shelter from prolonged rain can be suitable.
Not everything with a hole is suitable
Avoid splintering wood, treated material and sharp edges. Make sure drill holes are smooth and that the whole thing remains sturdy.
Look, but leave alone
The most fun part of the mission is observing. See which insects visit, but leave the hotel as undisturbed as possible.
