Hedgehogs don't just live in nature reserves. Gardens can also be part of their habitat. With a few simple choices, you can make your garden more attractive and safer for them.
1. Create space for shelter
Shrubs, leaves, branches and dense corners provide hedgehogs with places to rest and hide.
2. Create a safe passage
Hedgehogs move through multiple gardens. A small opening under a fence can help connect gardens.
3. Provide water
A shallow dish with clean water can be especially helpful during warm and dry periods. Make sure the spot is stable and safe.
4. Be careful with garden work
Check dense piles of leaves, branches or compost before moving them. Work quietly and give animals a chance to escape.
5. Don't keep everything neat and bare
A natural corner with different plants and ground cover offers more possibilities than a completely tidy garden.
